Can a remake live up to the original? I guess it depends on the generation you saw something for the 1st time. I saw the remake of Footloose and nobody did it as well as Kevin Bacon. I can’t even bring myself to watch the newer version of Willie Wonka.
Before beginning the newest journey, let’s talk briefly about the week proceedings. Helene tore through on Friday, September 27th. Awakening that morning with no power, I didn’t realize the blessings I was going to need to count, my home, food on my table, and clothes on my back. While at home camping was fun for a day or so, on Monday with power restored we began to finally get news of the world, having power I could at least watch the news on my phone. I had just thought it was horrible not to have A/C while sleeping and all the food that was having to be thrown out, and then saw the destruction Buncombe County was experiencing. I realized I didn’t have enough fingers for all that I was fortunate for.
Traveling with Zoey, we decided for a shorter car ride of only 5 hours, and choosing Oak Island this time.
If it weren’t for different faces and store names, I’d have thought I was transported back in time to last year. I found the tie-dye shop with also included DIY home decorations. Next door was the t-shirt shop which to have custom shirts made. Got my dog mom shirt. Mom now has her official grandma shirt. We then walked over to the granola shop. So glad we hadn’t eaten lunch, Ken made sure we got to sample every variety. With an invitation to come back for a cooking demonstration, it was time for a real meal.
Land lovers really shouldn’t ask a beach local what’s good to eat. With quizzical looks, we finally were suggested Little Bits. While a 14 oz hamburger sounds tasty, we decided to split the 8 oz. A walk to the park, we even got to attend an evening outdoor concert to include a funnel cake. YUM!!!!
Sunday/Monday were the weekends for most businesses. We took advantage and beach walked. We didn’t get to climb the lighthouse at Oak Island. Run by volunteers, and only certain days had tours, I didn’t book early enough. We did find that Southport Water Tours was open on Monday. A pontoon ride through the Cape Fear River and Atlantic Intracoastal waterway on the Sally Ann, we got to hear some of the history and numerous movies which Southport was a backdrop for. We stopped back by Hippie Chick Granola for our cooking (hands on) demonstration. Since a tropical cyclone had recently passed through the area , the main bridge to/from Southport took awhile longer than normal. With Zoey in her kennel, we decided to keep the day short.
After another beach walk, we decided to head to The Old Bridge Diner. With everything from breakfast to hamburgers to salads, I ate my “seafood” of popcorn shrimp. The evening entertainment was bingo at the local Elks Lodge. Oh what a hoot. I didn’t realize the multiple ways for which bingo could be played, thinking it was always horizontal, vertical, or a diagonal line. We didn’t win but sure enjoyed playing.
With going again to Southport, it was time Zoey got a chance to play some too. I found The Pet Wagon which had daycare. Walking around we found Dry Street Pub. The location was on Dry Street but beer/wine were served. We found the Southport Market. I found several souvenirs but we had to leave to get to our scheduled Southport Fun Tour. Dan, aka Rev, a musician who played with bands from 70s, was giving us a golf cart tour to tell the history and movie making of Southport. Because they believe so much in the oaks, they build around them. We didn’t see anybody famous but got to see where a future Netflix series, The Waterfront, was being filmed.
Since The Old Bridge Diner was so good, we decided to go back for breakfast. Another beach walk, it was time for lunch. As I mentioned I’m a land lover, a short walk from our place was Pepperoni Grill at the Beach. With the sun shining and outdoor dining, Zoey was able to accompany us. I’ve never been to New York to confirm the pizza but it sure felt like New York style. With full bellies, it was time to begin wrapping up the trip and repacking for the trip home.
